Brighton leader calls for right of EU nationals to remain in UK

The Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council has joined calls for EU nationals to be given the right to remain in the UK. In a video message and statement he said:

“There are over 17,000 people living in Brighton and Hove who were born in other European Union countries. They have made lives here, raising families, starting businesses, making a huge contribution to our city. They teach in our schools, they work in our hospitals, they run restaurants, hotels and shops, they work alongside us in our biggest companies and smallest enterprises.

Our friends, family members and colleagues are welcome in Brighton and Hove, and should not be used as bargaining chips in the Brexit negotiations by Government. Europeans have made a huge contribution to Brighton and Hove for generations, and should continue to do so. You deserve a commitment from the Government that you can stay, and as the Leader of your city council I will join calls for that to happen.”

His call follows similar messages by other Labour leaders, including Mayor of London Sadiq Khan: https://twitter.com/SadiqKhan/status/842349164105240577
