‘Care work is not just about wiping people’s bottoms!’

West Sussex care workers are tackling common myths in a new video about working in the care industry.

They give myth-busting answers to comments such as:

• ‘It’s just a job where you wipe bottoms and feed people’
• ‘Adult social care is not a job for men’
• ‘It’s all about working with old people’
• ‘You can’t turn care work into a career’
• ‘The hours are long and unsociable’.
Responding to ‘It’s just a job where you wipe bottoms and feed people’, one care worker says: “No, absolutely not. It is so rewarding.”
Another comments: “The amount of times I hear people say that and it really kind of upsets me.”
Answering the myth ‘It’s all about working with old people’ one person says “Some of the people that I care for are considerably younger than myself.”
Another responds: “You shouldn’t just look at them as old people, they’ve all had lives, they were all 23 like me once, they were all younger, so, no, definitely not.”
One of the male care workers answering the myth about care not being a job for men says “I’m appalled, that’s not true.”
People working in care across West Sussex, including care workers, healthcare assistants, home care workers and care home managers, are the faces of the recruitment campaign.
Their myth-busting answers are being told across social media and at recruitment events around the county in a bid to attract more people to join them and work in care.
West Sussex County Council has commissioned the new video and recruitment drive which will continue into 2018.
Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “It makes absolute sense to me that our local care workers should be the ones at the forefront of recruiting new people to join the industry.
“Every single day they make a huge difference to local people’s lives. They are dedicated, inspiring and absolutely committed to putting West Sussex residents with care needs at the heart of everything they do.”
