Forget London Fashion Week, Hastings Blue Reef Aquarium is staging its very own ‘Fishy Fashion Week’ starting this weekend. (February 11th – 19th) with the help of some very colourful characters.

Catwalks will be replaced by ‘Fishwalks’ as the aquarium invites visitors to follow a special trail around the displays to meet the Top Ten most fashionable fish.

They will then be invited to vote for their favourites with winners announced at the end of the week.

Blue Reef’s Chris Ireland said: “London Fashion Week starts on February 17th and our aquarists thought it would be a fun idea to stage our own aquatic version here at the aquarium.

“As well as being a fun and interactive way to provide visitors with an added dimension to their visit, it also allows us to showcase some of the aquarium’s lesser known inhabitants.

“We wanted to highlight some of the most colourful and unusual creatures we have here and, hopefully, it will give people a greater insight into the amazing world beneath the waves,” he added.

Among the species included in the ‘Top Ten’ are (in no particular order): Emperor angelfish, lipstick tang, oriental sweet lips, humbug damsel, John Dory, blue cheek goby, comet fish, lionfish, Picasso trigger and royal gramma.

“Tropical reef fish like the lipstick tang and Picasso trigger are famous for their extraordinary colours and patterns while John Dory and lionfish are well known for their unusual appearance. We’ll leave it up to the visitors to decide which ones they like best,” he added.

Visitors will be able to follow the trail through the displays and then vote for their favourites on the aquarium Facebook page.

Blue Reef will also be running a competition for visitors to design their own fashionable fish with the winner getting a large plush Nemo soft toy.

Blue Reef Aquarium, Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings, East Sussex TN34 3DW. Open daily from 10am. For more information call 01424 718776 or visit www.bluereefaquarium.co.uk.
