A nine year old pupil has won a county-wide primary schools competition to design a logo to raise awareness about eating less sugar.
Fletcher William Newell, a Year 4 pupil at Storrington First School, designed the winning logo.
His winning design featured a hand-drawn chef and the message ‘Chef says eat less sugar’.
The competition was run by West Sussex County Council’s Public Health and County Catering teams. The winning logo will now be used in West Sussex County Council’s sugar reduction campaigns and awareness raising messages.
Fletcher said: “It was good fun taking part and it was really good to win. I started with four ideas and tried them all. My mum thought this was the best one as it had a chef on it and was asking people to eat less sugar in a way that was not frightening them but still made them listen.
“At home the whole family have now cut down on the amount of puddings we eat and we are eating more fresh fruits instead. It really made us think and I hope other families might do the same when they see the logo.”
The youngster beat off competition from more than 70 other entries across the county.
Fletcher’s prize was a £50 Amazon voucher and an ‘Eat Right Stay Bright’ workshop for his school, provided by the school meals provider Chartwells.
Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, who presented Fletcher with his prize, said: “Congratulations Fletcher! The winning design is simple but really effective. We hope it will help in promoting sugar reduction to both young people and adults.”
West Sussex is a sugar reduction champion. This work has included cutting the amount of sugar in primary school meals by half a kilo over the course of a year.
