A better life with yoga

My story by Kerry Thornback.

I first started Yoga about seven years ago as I had always been drawn to it. I do not know why as no one I knew had practiced it. It was just meant to be.



I first looked for a class when I was about 17 but could not find an evening class. I forgot all about it and finally started when I was 29. I wanted some where I could go to have some quiet time and just concentrated on myself. I had grown into a very anxious young lady due to various ups and downs in my life. I had suffered post traumatic stress disorder and had grieved for more people than I had bargained for in my short life.
 
I was initially going for my mental state of mind rather than physical state.  I started at 29 and have been practicing ever since, and I am 36 now!  I have practiced through both of my pregnancies.
 
There are many varieties of yoga and I luckily started with a teacher who focused a lot on the breath, As in Yoga we say ' When the breath is calm the mind is calm' and it is very true. The next time you feel stressed, check your breath, you are probably breathing very fast and very shallow! Yoga teaches us to use the breath to its full capacity and we become 'Yoga fit'. I went running with a friend of mine who belonged to a running club and it was my first time. I thought I would be left behind. I left her and a few others behind much to my surprise! I knew how to breathe properly! So you become a lot more capable to deal with every day stress etc, and also become more flexible and toned! What more could we want?
 
Like with my other therapies it deals with the inner self.  When we are happy with ourselves inside we are happy with the world and ourselves outside.
 
I also used Reiki and Meridian Energy Therapies to help myself and was so thrilled with the results I thought I really want to heal others! I heard a couple of ladies talking in a cafe one day and one of them said they did not agree with Reiki! I felt like asking her why? but deep inside I did not have to as I knew, She obviously  not ever had experienced it and was  skeptical. That is fine. It is not for everyone. It has taken years for me to get  my boyfriend agree to receiving Reiki and a Yoga lesson. He was very glad after that he did agree. It helped him with a bad knee and wrist he had. I am not religious but do believe there is more to us than just being. Our bodies are such a gift and really very clever it can heal itself if given the chance. There is amazing healing energy all around it just needs to be channeled right.
 
People who are wary of natural therapies or alternative therapies are only so because they have been conditioned to a certain way, but if they would stop and think or research a little, they would find that people started healing with natural remedies and using the body to help itself centuries ago. It is modern times that have taken over. More doctors now are looking into alternative therapies also. Modern medicine is great but it does not treat the cause, it is more of a quick fix, via tablets to stop the symptoms. Hence the problem can and will usually return. Aches and pains can be brought on by emotions that have been suppressed for years. Especially back pain that people suffer from. I have read that our physical self is a mirror image of our mental self.
 
 We have to feed the body with water and with the correct food. We would not  put diesel in a petrol engine on purpose as we know the car would break down. So why is it we eat and drink unhealthily?
 
We give our cars M O T's but a lot of people neglect themselves!! It’s amazing really; we have a fine tuned machine (our body) but we let it down by putting in the wrong things  and not looking after it. We all like a little drink or naughty foods but it’s about having the control over our mind which is important. 'The mind is given to you, you are not given to the mind' which is a really important thing to remember.
 
I am looking for people to partake in group therapies with Meridian Energy Therapy. For all sorts of things, could be Confidence, Over eating, Under eating, Stress, Phobia's, Aches and pains, Smoking, addictions. I am based in Eastbourne but if enough people elsewhere were interested I would travel no prob. I offer I 2 1 in these therapies also but I thought it would be nice for people to try it with others who have same problems. It would be cheaper also in group. Also support for people.
 
Yoga I teach in Eastbourne on a Tues Eve 7 - 8-30 £5.50 per session.. Yoga and reiki and meridian energy  therapy available privately too.
