Mid Sussex District Council is the least complained about Council in Sussex according to the number of cases referred to the Local Government Ombudsman, the independent watchdog for councils.

In cases where residents are not satisfied with the response they have received from their council, they can ask for the issue to be taken up by the Local Government Ombudsman.  Each year the Ombudsman produces an annual review of complaints against city, borough and district councils.  The aim is to help the councils to deal with complaints better and improve their services.

In Sussex, the results published for the year ending March 2009 show that Mid Sussex District Council received the fewest referrals to the Ombudsman – a total of eleven, with five of these being looked into further, non of which resulted in a finding of maladministration.

“This report provides welcome confirmation from the Local Government Ombudsman that Mid Sussex District Council is the least complained about Council in Sussex,” said Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Cabinet Member for Finance and Service Delivery. “We are committed to providing excellent customer service to residents at the first point of contact to save residents time and taxpayers money.”
A recent meeting of the Performance and Scrutiny Committee welcomed the most recent statistics on complaints and compliments.  A new reporting format means that both complaints and compliments are being assessed on a quarterly basis. Having all of these comments reported on a more frequent basis means that resulting actions are put in place sooner, leading to a quicker response on areas that need improvement.  This results in a better service for the community.
Of the 121,583 calls to Mid Sussex District Council’s Customer Contact Centre and Reception from April 2008 to March 2009, 123 complaints and 94 compliments were received.  All of the complaints were responded to within 10 days.
