Following a call from the coastguard Littlehampton RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Renée Sherman and volunteer crew launched at 6.59am on Tuesday 19 July to assist Selsey RNLI lifeboat in the rescue of a small leisure boat which had run out of fuel and had been drifting without power five miles off Selsey. The Selsey lifeboat had been launched earlier and taken the boat in tow.
Contact between both lifeboats established that the current position was five miles south west of Littlehampton harbour. Littlehampton’s lifeboat set out to the reported location. On arrival at the scene the tow line was transferred to Littlehampton’s lifeboat and the casualty and four adults were taken back to Town Quay within Littlehampton harbour. The lifeboat returned to the station at 8.17am where it was refuelled and made ready for service.
A RNLI spokesman said “If you are planning a visit to the coast to go sailing, please remember to respect the sea at all times and that you have all the relevant sailing equipment and fuel to ensure your own personal safety.”
