Long Bench Slat Engraving Scheme to be relaunched

Due to popular demand, the Long Bench slat engraving scheme on Littlehampton seafront is set to be relaunched on 14 August.

The scheme was originally launched to allow people to commemorate a loved one or to record a special message, such as a marriage proposal, which was then inscribed into a slat on the bench.
The scheme closed around five years ago but is now being revived due to interest from the local community and visitors to the area keen to see the scheme back up and running again.

It’s popularity led to a review of the scheme to look at the most cost-effective approach for managing and maintaining the Long Bench to ensure it will continue to look its best for the future.

The Council will be working in partnership with Aldingbourne Trust which will now take on the management of the scheme.

Phil Graham, Economic Regeneration Officer at Arun District Council, said: “It is fantastic that the Long Bench slat engraving scheme is being relaunched and we are looking forward to reading all of the new messages.
“We are really pleased to be working with such a valued partner as the Aldingbourne Trust to see the scheme develop and help to promote everything Littlehampton seafront has to offer.”

The scheme will be managed through the wood department at the Aldingbourne Country Centre and people with learning disabilities, who are supported by the Trust, will be actively involved in fitting the slats and maintaining the bench.
Peter Stanley, General Manager of the Trust, said: “We are very excited to be
involved in this project – we look forward to working with the local community and visitors to Littlehampton.”

A new website is being launched on 14 August 2017 at www.longbench.org, email longbench@aldingbourne.org or call 07841 042960. The website will provide further information including a price list and how to order a slat. Both larger and smaller sized slats will be available.

The council is aware that since the original scheme was launched some existing slat holder details may have changed. If you have not received a letter from the council explaining the arrangements for the new scheme, please register your details with the Aldingbourne Trust.
