A Marathon New Year challenge

The Mid Sussex Wellbeing team is getting 2014 up and running by helping local people to get back into exercise and to take part in a Marathon New Year challenge.

The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend returns in May and Mid Sussex District Council’s Wellbeing team is keen to help local residents take part, especially those who haven’t exercised in a while. They have joined up with Haywards Heath Harriers and Burgess Hill Runners to provide dedicated running groups to help beginners learn to run.

The Learn to Run courses start on 4 April in Burgess Hill and 3 April in Haywards Heath at a cost of just £15 for 10 sessions. The training, which people can attend in the daytime or in the evening, is open to anyone who would like to start running. The sessions are designed for beginners and aim to help people to progress from a walk to being able to complete a 3.3 mile run in ten weeks.

The Mid Sussex Marathon is a unique event that’s perfect for beginners because people can choose how far they want to run. The marathon takes place over three days, at three different locations and at each event beginners will be able take part in the shorter Mid Sussex Mile, which will run alongside the main Marathon race.

Runners who feel more confident can take on a leg of the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend by running in the 10-mile race in East Grinstead on Saturday 3 May, the 10-mile Haywards Heath race on Sunday 4 May or the 6.2-mile (10km) race in Burgess Hill on Monday 5 May. Together these three races combine to add up to the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles. There’s also the option for novice runners to compete as part of a team, with each runner covering a small section of the marathon distance.
