Need the heads up on corporate tax? Meet our columnist Mike Chapman

Mike is a senior manager specialising in corporate tax work with a strong business development and leadership record.

Mike trained in the firm of Honey Barret & Co in Eastbourne and upon qualification as a chartered accountant moved to the South London firm of Binder Hamlyn to specialise in tax work and where he qualified as a chartered tax adviser. Although Mike originally dealt with a mixed portfolio of personal and corporate taxation cases, when Binder Hamlyn merged with Arthur Andersen he began to specialise solely in corporate tax work, predominantly handling the tax affairs of the UK subsidiaries of some major US and Japanese multinationals.

Following a spell working for BDO when his office was acquired by that firm, Mike moved to Ernst & Young where he worked for the Entrepreneurial Services Group, handling the tax compliance and advisory affairs of larger Owner Managed Businesses.

Mike took the opportunity to move back to the South Coast in 2004 when he joined the Brighton office of Mazars where he was responsible for the provision of all corporate tax compliance and advisory services for the office and where he was a member of the Senior Management Team for the firm in the South East. He became an established business developer through holding technical seminars, the production of marketing literature and running campaign mailings.

On a firm-wide level he was a member of Mazars’ national technical panels specialising in R&D and Capital Allowances advisory issues. His other specialist strengths include corporate finance transaction support work, tax efficient group restructuring and HMRC enquiry negotiation.

Mike is an experienced speaker, having hosted internal budget and other tax planning seminars to invited audiences. He has also presented on a number of occasions to the local branches of SESCA and CIOT on planning issues associated with corporate finance transactions. He is the co-author of CCH/ICAEW Accountants Digest Publication ‘Acquiring a Business’ and is a contributor to local business publications.

Following the ending of Mazars presence in Sussex, Mike is looking forward to the opportunity to continue his career at Knill James and to applying his 25 years’ tax experience in helping a new set of clients to achieve tax solutions for their businesses.

Mike will be writing a regular column for The Sussex Newspaper starting from next week.
