Is renewable energy right for you?
TSN hears that two Greening Campaign events looking at renewable energy for residents are taking place in West Sussex.
There has been lots of information recently on the Government incentive to encourage installation of renewable energy.
Workshops have been organised by the Greening Campaign to explain the scheme to interested residents and what it means. They take place on Wednesday January 26, at 7.30pm, at Billingshurst Village Hall, Roman Way, Billingshurst, RH14 9QW, and on Wednesday February 9, at 7.30pm, at St George’s Centenary Hall, Cleveland Road, Chichester, PO19 7AD.
West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart said: “There are lots of advertisements offering ‘free electricity’, and leaving householders confused. These workshops will help people understand the offer and give them the full facts.
“The problem for householders and businesses is how to work their way through the web of information so they can access the scheme safely through the Government initiative.”
The Government scheme supports more renewable energy products being installed across the country. People are being offered up to 41.3p for every unit of energy they create using solar energy systems on their roof, even if they use the electricity themselves.
Some companies are offering to install the system and give the householder the electricity for free if they can have the tariff, known as the rent a roof scheme.
Director of the Greening Campaign Terena Plowright said: “We want people to understand the incentives which the Government has made available. The offer can reduce bills for householders as well as encourage people to use renewable energy on their homes, but people need to understand the facts.”

In brief, a Which? report recommends self funded installation, as home owners are likely to save/make more that way.
It's a no brainer that if installation companies will install free, then they're going to make enough on the tariff thereafter to pay for their equipment and time. It would therefore be prudent to take out a soft loan, or remortgage, the tariff payments being used to more than pay for that.
