University offers helping hand to entrepreneurs

Expert advice for starting and growing a business is now available from the University of Chichester.

It is part of the new Be the Business scheme which offers one-to-one advice and peer mentoring workshops, along with financial help for new and established firms in West Sussex.

The programme was launched in July following a £850,000 cash injection from West Sussex County Council to boost the economy and create new jobs.

The University will lead the scheme as part of a consortium by offering specialist boot camps and business start-up advice.

The consortium – made up of Sussex Enterprise, Branduin Business Support Services, and MDHub – will also provide one-to-one help sessions and peer mentoring.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Clive Behagg said: “The University has a successful track record of supporting businesses through advice, consultancy and research.

“However, thanks to the new programme, we will also be able to offer one-to-one mentoring and financial help.

“This is a partnership approach to encouraging economic growth in the area.”

As part of the scheme, the business advice sessions will be held in the newly-refurbished Dome Enterprise Centre, on the Bognor Regis Campus, which underwent a multi-million pound restoration last year.

They will be led by tutors focused on helping new and established firms to improve by creating up-to-date business and marketing plans.

Gareth Sear, from the University’s School of Enterprise, said: “If you are starting a business, or interested in becoming self-employed, I recommend attending the workshops which will help overcome any barriers you may face.

“The networking events are also a good chance to meet other business owners and find out about opportunities of working with the University.”
