This is the 10th Tony Hill and Carol Jordan book, these intense characters you might remember from the television show, “Wire in the Blood” starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris. This latest instalment does not disappoint.
After some time away from “the job” Carol Jordan returns as head of ReMIT with her own hand picked team, including long term sidekick Detective Sergeant Paula McIntyre. Single women are being abducted and killed, all of them last seen at weddings. This is no ordinary psychopath they are dealing with, Carol, her team and the awkward psychologist Dr Tony Hill have to put all their personal demons aside to save more women from this terrible fate.
There is the usual uncomfortable tension between Tony and Carol, and this time their relationship reaches a whole new level, their true feelings for each other will finally be revealed in the most unsuspecting way. Carol’s trusted friend and colleague Paula has her own problems to deal with, her foster son is involved in a nasty cyber-bullying case. Can the team win this one when their heads are elsewhere?
Having not read a Val McDermid book for a while, I was reminded of what an excellent writer she really is. You cannot help but read another chapter, then another, before you know it, you’ve got to the draw dropping ending. Her characters are so real, you think you know them personally, her description is colourful and engaging, and above all, I love the fact I never guessed how it would end. Although this is the tenth in a series of books, which has seen many characters grow, it can still be enjoyed as a stand alone novel.
Even if you have never read a Val McDermid before, pick it up, give it a go, you will find yourself absorbed in a world of psychological thrills.
