Men can be obsessed about a team or a sport. Just acknowledging that this is an important part of their lives is a glorious way of recognising not only that he has his own way in the world but also that you respect his interests. He may be completely caught up in all the statistics and performance, he might have posters, mugs, scarves and all other paraphernalia pertaining to said team but he still can adore you. Just don’t love the team more than he does as a way to his heart – an oft ill chosen strategy that has left many a female heart shattered on the footsteps to the stadium of his soul. Oh, and do get the basics right (type of sport, some concept of competitions, etc) – it can be flattering to ask him to explain more.

Everyone has a bit of a soft spot for Bond. If they don’t do you really want the kind of sensitive, new Agey type, more into Monet than M, interested in his Botticellis in favour of his Blofelds? Once you’ve acknowledged this, most men will have compared themselves to at least one of the seven actors to have portrayed him (did you forget Niven?) and will have pretended that it was them in the black tie, with the glorious maidens swooning at them. Don’t roleplay this to death, just a friendly squeeze of the bicep and the fond comparison whispered in his ear can win you his affections.

Clinging to a man or constricting him can squeeze all hope of a relationship out of existence. Give him permission to go out once in a while to catch up with his friends. Don’t accept that he can come home off his trolley and behave like a boor as a way of carrying on the evening. But also don’t set a curfew. He will want to return to you and be with you – his mates will give him abuse for leaving early if he does – but what a signal that this man is really into you.

Men love to think that they are a mix between Michael Schumacher and all the best stunt drivers from Hollywood. No, they won’t perpetually drive like this but they will be confident that were the need to arise, they could J-turn out of the problem, accelerate away and turn the corner on two wheels, all the while holding the steering wheel with one nonchalant hand, the other idly stroking your thigh in a reassuring fashion. This might never happen but the thought will have gone through their minds and, as they will have pulled up at the lights on one or three occasions, they will have looked across at the next door car, sucked in their stomachs and given themselves a wry smile because they knew they looked far better.
