Coleridge’s Dark Maritime Tale Visits Worthing

The National Theatre has co-commissioned Rime, a mix of circus, dance and theatre based on Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which is performed at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre by Square Peg Contemporary Circus from August 8th – 10th.

Directed by Tim Lenkiewicz, the 2012 Herald Angel Award-winning production combines circus, theatre, dance and Coleridge’s epic poem, to elicit the emotional journey of the groom-to-be in the run up to his wedding. The performance is a combination of group acrobatics, human towers, Chinese pole, ropes and flips, drawn together by one of the UK’s freshest new circus companies.

First premiered to a sold out audience at Roundhouse in April 2012, Rime has since been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012, the National Theatre’s Watch This Space festival and Camp Bestival.

Square Peg, which was founded in 2009 as The Roundhouse Circus Company, have now produced four shows for fifty public performances and members of the company have performed in high-profile live performance and film including the Olympic Opening Ceremony, English National Ballet, Theatre Royal Haymarket, the Cairo Opera Ballet Company, Martin Scorcese’s Hugo and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Artistic director Tim Lenkiewicz began his career in the circus over 15 years ago, and has since travelled across the globe as a performer, teacher, director and project leader. Having trained at both London’s Circus Space and the Kiev State College for Circus and Variety Arts, his work combines circus with dance, theatre and technology with the aim of creating beautiful, innovative storytelling.

Rime plays at the Pavilion Theatre, Marine Parade, Worthing. BN11 3PX from August 8th – 10th at 7.30pm with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm.
