A Chance to Relax at the Assembly Hall Theatre Pantomime

The Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, is proud to introduce a relaxed performance for a matinee of Jack and the Beanstalk on Thursday 2 Jan at 5.00pm.

Relaxed performances are aimed at families with children with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders,  a learning disability or for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment in the theatre. There are likely to be some small changes to the show, in terms of lighting and sound cues, but the overall content of the show will not change.

There’s also a more relaxed attitude to noise in the auditorium, in order to reduce anxiety and ensure a safe, enjoyable theatre visit. Bookers will be sent a visual story (detailed information and photos about the theatre and show) in advance and there will be a designated ‘chill-out’ area for use during the performance.

Brian McAteer, Theatre Director at The Assembly Hall Theatre says: “We’re absolutely delighted to be one of the first theatres in the South East to hold a relaxed performance and hope that it will allow even more people to enjoy the magic of Jack and the Beanstalk. Our plan is for relaxed performances to become as standard a part of a show’s schedule, as signed performances are for the hearing-impaired”.

Martin Dodd, Director of UK Productions says: ‘We believe that everybody should have the opportunity to be excited and inspired by live theatre, but unfortunately in the past many people with autism or similar conditions have felt excluded. With this performance we aim to make the theatre feel welcoming and inclusive for these children, young adults and their families.”

Jo Blamires, Kent Autistic Trust (Family Support – Children) says: “We are delighted to hear that The Assembly Hall Theatre Tunbridge Wells is putting on a relaxed performance of their pantomime for children and young people with autism and their families. The chance for preparation before the performance and the adjustments within the pantomime will give families a chance to have a really enjoyable outing”

There is also a signed performance on Saturday 21 December at 5.00pm.

This year’s pantomime, Jack and The Beanstalk, stars much loved actor, TV star and ex Waterloo Road’s Grantly Budgen, Philip Martin Brown and children’s Hi-5 presenter Luke Roberts plus Hollyoaks’ Sarah Jane Buckley in an unmissable family spectacular. Comedian and actor Noel Brodie will play Simple Simon and completing this year’s line-up is Stephen David who will be on hand as the hilariously over the top Dame Trott.

Performances are from Friday 13 December 2013 to Sunday 5 January 2014. Tickets for Jack and The Beanstalk cost £16.50 – £23.00 and are available by calling the Box Office on 01892 530613/532072 (£1.25 per ticket booking fee) or online on www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk (£1.25 per ticket booking fee).
