Bittersweet Comedy Brings Opposites Together

Following a celebrated critical response at 2014’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Steve Wood’s debut comedy, You’re Never Too Old – a wry comedy for two actors of a certain age – will play at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne, starring Diane Keen and Graham Cole, from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th November, as part of its first UK tour.

Diane Keen has been a household name and popular fixture on British television for many years, best known for her roles as Fliss Hawthorne in The Cuckoo Waltz, Jenny Burden in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries and Julia Parsons in the long-running BBC soap Doctors. Diane plays the touching and polite Ada.

Graham Cole stars as the unkempt, beer swigging, Tommy. Graham has prolific theatre credits including Suddenly At Home (UK Tour), Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar and John Christow in The Hollow (UK Tour). He is perhaps most recognisable as the character PC Tony Stamp in the long-running television drama The Bill.

When Tommy and Ada meet on a park bench it is all too clear they are from very different backgrounds; but as they begin to confide secrets and recount memories, could this be the start of something special for such an unlikely pair?

The story that emerges is sad, funny and bittersweet. Steve Wood’s script is subtle, full of telling detail and delightful turns of phrase that bring to mind Alan Bennett or Victoria Wood. Danusia Iwaszko directs this charming two hander, one-act play that examines relationships, loneliness and humanity.

You’re Never Too Old appears at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne from 10th – 14th November at 7.45pm nightly with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets priced £15.50 – £21.50 are available online at eastbournetheatres.co.uk or through the Eastbourne Theatres box office on 01323 412000.
