Bowls Club Members Add to £1000 raised so Far for Macmillan

Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September see Pulborough Bowls Club host it’s annual club finals, albeit under covid 19 restrictions! Play starts at midday Saturday with the new Handicap Pairs Final and Sunday sees the Drawn Pairs first on the turf at 1pm.

With money yet to collect from the Oddfellows Arms in Pulborough and the Sports and Social Club, Jeff, Tara and Ryan Davy hosted the annual Penny Rhoder Cup at Pulborough Bowls Club on Bank Holiday Monday, in memory of Jeff’s wife, Penny Rhoder, who sadly passed away 6 years ago of cancer.

Members took to the green at 1.45pm for the “spider”, Where bowlers pay to aim a bowl at the jack at the centre of the green, on the chime of a bell. The closest bowler wins the spoils, which in this case was a bottle of whisky, won by George Lewis.

8 triples began play shortly after, moving rinks after every 6 ends to play new opposition. After 2 rotations and a shot difference of +7 shots, third place and a free drink from Life member, Mick Ralph, went to Steve Addset, Jeff Elliott and Julie Day. After winning their first game 14/0, Paul Day, John Walsh And Linda Meadowcroft were on a roll, taking a further 5 shots from their next victims, only to stall in the third session, leaving them on +13 shots, narrowly missing out by just 1 shot to winners, Jeff Davy, Paul Smith and Sid Roots on +14.

The trophies were donated by Mick Ralph and presented by Mick and Penny’s family, followed by a sizeable raffle that contributed over £150 to the charity total. With donations still building, it is hoped that a donation in excess of £1000 can be made to the Midhurst Macmillan nurses in Penny’s memory.
