West Sussex showed its commitment to end modern day slavery at a wreath-laying event at Westminster Abbey.
The event was held to commemorate the work of abolitionist MP William Wilberforce and to mark the UK’s commitment to fighting modern day slavery.
West Sussex County Council Chairman Pat Arculus attended the event.
Pat said: “It was a privilege to attend the memorial service and wreath laying at Westminster Abbey, where through the various inspirational speakers it is clear that all of us can play a part in exposing and challenging the despicable acts of modern day slavery both in the UK and worldwide.”
The event took place on 12 October and was also attended by Princess Eugenie and by the Prime Minister, Theresa May.
There are still many types of modern slavery including sexual exploitation, child trafficking and forced labour.
The County Council is committed to doing what it can to raise awareness of modern day slavery and help residents spot the signs.
It has recently asked residents to be aware of Child Sexual Exploitation by taking note of these key messages:
• It is important for everyone to be aware of the signs of CSE as victims can be any gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity and from any background
• Vulnerable groups often remain invisible and it is essential that people stay alert to the signs of child sexual exploitation
• Anyone who has concerns about a child can find out more by visiting the County Council website www.westsussex.gov.uk/CSE
