Eastbourne Hosts Moving Wartime Drama, Kindertransport

In the week of National Holocaust Memorial Day, Eastbourne Theatres are proud to announce the award-winning Kindertransport will be playing at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne from 25^th February – 1^st March.

This heart-breaking and poignant play by Diane Samuels tells the incredible story of a little known element of World War II. In the nine months before the outbreak of war, nearly ten thousand, mainly Jewish, children from Germany and Austria were transported to safety in the UK via the Kindertransport. Many would never see their parents again.

This moving and critically acclaimed modern classic casts a light on this story of love, and loss in a deeply affecting way.

It’s 1938 and nine year old Eva is put onto a train by her reluctant mother, sending her out of danger and into the arms of strangers. In England, decades later, another mother prepares for the departure of her grown-up daughter, Faith, as she cuts the ties of childhood. Then a chance discovery opens an unhealed wound and a long-buried secret is revealed. The bittersweet experience of every parent as they try to teach their child to survive alone unites these women across the decades.

Winner of the Verity Bargate and Meyer-Whitworth Awards and a GCSE set book, Kindertransport is a moving insight into the complex relationship between mothers and daughters. Since its London premiere in 1993 it has been seen worldwide.

The cast includes; Maggie Steed who is most known as Doreen in Jam and Jerusalem, and also starred in BBC’s Born & Bred. The show also features Eastbourne based actress Janet Dibley who is best known for her roles in BBC’s Doctors, EastEnders and The Two of Us. Gabrielle Dempsey who will be seen in the new HBO TV series of Game of Thrones in April, and Tracey Childs whose extensive stage career includes as Mrs Lintott in The History Boys with the National Theatre and its world tour.

Kindertransport plays at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne from 25^th February – 1^st March with nightly performances at 7.45pm and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm.
