It might have not been in the woods but more than 350 families enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Burgess Hill last week.
The annual event on Wednesday 6 June, in St John’s Park, was organised by West Sussex County Council and its early help service in Mid Sussex.
Children and families had the opportunity to sing-along with the county council’s library service and have fun and games with Pooch the dog from Triangle Leisure Centre.
The event was supported by a range of organisations including Burgess Hill District Lions Club, local childcare providers, Triangle Leisure Centre and local support agencies.
The county council’s Sensory Bus was also at the picnic where children were able to experiment with different textures, materials and light sources.
Places for People provided a soft play activity and members of the Kings Church got crafty with a variety of activities for the children, including decorating their own cut out teddy bears.
Stephen Hillier, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This annual event has grown thanks to everyone involved. It is a great chance for families to relax in a safe environment and spend time with other families who live nearby.
“Every day, the Mid Sussex team works together with local families to offer them information, advice and support. They are a lifeline to many so it is good to see them enjoying themselves too!”
The team also runs the local Children and Family Centres which provides groups for parents/carers to attend such as Discover Baby, Stay and Play, Tiny Explorers and Giggle and Wiggles.
The Mayor of Burgess Hill, Chris Cherry, attended and joined in with the children, and spoke to families and the organisations supporting the event.
Chris said: “This was a very popular event with lots of families in attendance. The weather was glorious and the children were able to take full advantage of the many activities, provided by the various agencies present.
“The occasion was very efficiently marshalled by the Burgess Hill Lions, who also provided first aid facilities including an ambulance. Both my teddy and I had a splendid time and a lovely afternoon was had by all.”
