West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet members unanimously agreed today to build a new Woodlands Meed College with a budget of £20m.
At a virtual meeting on Tuesday, 26 May 2020, Cabinet members authorised the funding for a new building to replace the College’s existing facilities at its Birchwood Grove site in Burgess Hill.
Nigel Jupp, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Today’s agreement underlines the Council’s commitment to providing the very best environment to support the education of all West Sussex children.
“After today’s decision we can all look forward to the provision of a new building for the College which meets the needs of all its pupils and staff.
“I am pleased we have reached this important milestone and look forward to working closely with the College’s governors in the coming months.”
The new teaching block will be built on the College’s current playing field and will provide the special school with a capacity for 100 pupils. External work will include new play areas and car parking.
Designs for the new College building will continue to be developed with governors ahead of the submission of a planning application later this year.
The rebuild has been allocated a £20m budget from the council’s Capital Programme.
Pupils will be taught in the current classrooms while the work takes place.
