Roaring Twenties Masterpiece Comes to the Eastbourne Stage

Evoking the decadence of America’s Jazz Age, literary classic The Great Gatsby is brought to life in this sizzling new stage adaptation that comes to the Devonshire Park Theatre from Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th September.

This special production, which was commissioned by the acclaimed Blackeyed Theatre to mark the 90th anniversary of the novel’s publication, will have its world premiere in Eastbourne before embarking on an extensive UK tour.

Recreating the sights, sounds and feel of America’s roaring twenties, as seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece is a brilliant study of a society obsessed with wealth and status.

Adapted by Stephen Sharkey, whose work includes The May Queen (Liverpool Everyman) and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Liverpool Playhouse/Nottingham Playhouse), this exciting new production features fabulous live music alongside the timeless language of FitzGerald’s “Great American Novel” to create a truly fresh and inspiring theatrical experience.

“Like a cocktail-fuelled ride in a fast car, this adaptation moves through F Scott Fitzgerald’s great story of a doomed love and a decadent decade, heading toward its final, inevitable crash,” said Sharkey

The Great Gatsby was voted the 20th century’s best American novel by the Modern Library editorial board. The cast includes Adam Jowett (Emmerdale, Last Tango In Halifax), Tristan Pate (Dusty, Dreamboats and Petticoats, Cider With Rosie) and Stacey Ghent (Sondheim: Women, Father Christmas, The Opinion Makers).
