Could you spare a few hours every week to make sure young carers don’t miss out on the opportunities that many others take for granted?
West Sussex County Council is looking for volunteers to provide transport for young carers who would otherwise be unable to attend local groups for support.
A young carer is someone who takes on responsibilities at home because someone in their family has a disability, has been ill for a long time, experiences mental ill health, or has a problem linked to drugs or alcohol. “Often this can mean that getting out and about to social activities and groups can become very difficult, because the young carer can’t rely on a lift from mum or dad,” explained Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, Peter Evans. “This can make these young people very isolated and affect their self-confidence. Just being able to attend a group with other young carers once a week can make a big difference.” Volunteers need to have a full driving licence and their own fully-insured car. They will need good communication skills and sensitivity to the needs of young carers. Typically they will need to give around three hours a week during term time for a minimum of 12 months.
Volunteers will need to have a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service and provide two references.
