12 hour endurance fitness challenge pushes firefighters to the limit

Forty-six miles, 2,300 pull ups, 4,600 push ups and 6,900 squats – it’s all in a day’s work for Littlehampton Blue Watch.

The crew of firefighters took on a gruelling 12 hour Crossfit Murph on Tuesday while wearing 10kg weighted vests, in a bid to raise money for two causes close to their hearts.

A Crossfit Murph is made up of one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 squats, rounded off with another one-mile run.

And after beginning their 12 hour challenge at 7am, they powered on through the day between them, eventually completing 23 complete Murphs.

As well as smashing their fitness targets, the crew managed to raise more than £2,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity, and a local two-year-old boy named George Pannell who has been diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the nerves and glands.

Kate Gray, who convinced the rest of her Watch to join her in the challenge, said: “We knew it was going to be a real test of our endurance, but nothing can really prepare you for the physical and mental demands that a challenge like this puts on you.

“But we knew we were doing this for two incredible causes, and that kept us going  – even when the going got tough. The Fire Fighters Charity carries out such important work with serving and former firefighters and their families, it’s vital that they are able to continue with their work for years to come.

“And when we heard about little George and everything his family has to contend with, getting him to hospital in Southampton, and dealing with a condition like neuroblastoma, we just knew we wanted to do our bit to help. All of us on the Watch are parents ourselves, so we wanted to step up and help.

“Unfortunately George wasn’t able to come and see us yesterday, as he had to be taken into hospital, but he sent us a video message wishing us good luck. That made it all the more worthwhile.”
