A runaway success – committee chairman sees community funding in action

A West Sussex County Local Committee Chairman saw first hand the benefits of the Community Initiative Fund (CIF).

Councillor Pete Bradbury visited the Clair parkrun in Haywards Heath, which has benefited from a £1,000 grant under the CIF scheme.

The Chairman of the Central Mid Sussex County Local Committee, said: “The Parkrun is a weekly timed 5km run that takes place each Saturday morning at 9am.  It is free to take part and the event is aimed at all ages and abilities.  There are now more than 300 parkruns across the globe.

“I am really delighted that the event benefited from a grant because this is just the type of community activity that CIF grants are designed to help.

“It was a marvellous morning, and what an inspiration to see so many, young and old, out running.”

The £1,000 grant contributed to the purchase of equipment such as timers, a barcode scanner and a laptop.  These are used to ensure the smooth running of the event and the processing of the results.

The  Clair parkrun was launched in July 2013 and the organisers say they aim to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where people of all abilities can participate, support, volunteer, socialise and get fit for free.

So far 341 different people have taken part in the event with a total of 629 runs being completed.   People who want to find out more should go to http://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/form/ to register.

You will need to print off your barcode and bring it with you to the park.  The barcode will be scanned at the end of the event and your result will be published to the Clair parkrun web page at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/clair/

All West Sussex County Council CLC’s have community fund grants available and you can find out more at http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/your_council/meetings_and_decision-making/meetings/county_local_committees/community_initiative_funding.aspx
