Brighton and Hove is the nation’s thriftiest city when it comes to trick-or-treating

National Trick or Treating survey forecast national rise in Halloweeners

The city of Brighton and Hove is the nation’s thriftiest city when it comes to trick-or-treaters, according to research conducted by fancydressball.co.uk, along with Gloucester.

The study into UK attitudes towards trick-or-treating surveyed UK parents to find out how many children would be dressing up and knocking on doors this year, as well as identifying what children in each city would typically be gifted and what costumes would be most popular.

Only 11% of parents in Brighton and Hove/Gloucester said they were happy to gift money to Halloweeners, compared to the national average of 43%.

Nationally sweets remained the most popular “treat” with money second, fruit though is also surprisingly popular at 22%.

Wolverhampton (69%) is also the most generous city in terms of giving trick or treaters money. Brighton and Gloucester are the stingiest

Worcester has the fewest number of trick-or-treaters in the UK (46%).

The survey was commissioned to dispel the myth that trick or treating is a declining tradition. Finding that the country, on average is likely to see a 2% rise in children heading out this Halloween.

Coventry (94%), Swansea (85%) and Norwich (84%) topped the survey as the most popular cities for Halloween festivities.

Nationally you can expect to see lots of witches walking the streets. The broomstick-riding, cauldron-stirring, fairy-tale characters are Britain’s favourite fancy dress costume when it comes to trick-or-Treating with 18% of the nation opting for the pointy black hat.

Dracula (18%), Mummies (15%) and ghosts (14%) will also be out in force on October 31.

Owner of the family run fancy dress site, Paul Howcroft, believes that the growing popularity of fancy dress has helped boost trick or treat numbers over the last decade.

“Fancy dress costumes have become more accessible to the general public as the prices of costumes have come down in recent years and the range of costumes available both on and offline is incredible.”

“People love dressing up for Halloween, parents love dressing up their children and pets as well. Trick or treating brings the community together and for one night a year neighbours and neighbourhoods are creating a magical night for the young ones.”
