If you can spare a minimum of two hours per month, you could really make that time count by joining our waste prevention volunteers.
West Sussex County Council’s Waste Prevention Advisor (WPA) scheme promotes the best ways West Sussex residents of all ages can reduce, reuse and recycle – and we are looking for new recruits.
The scheme has been running for seven years, supporting the waste team at West Sussex County Council to increase recycling and reduce waste using a community based approach.
The team are looking for people who can offer volunteer support within their local communities, at planned events, give presentations, or talk to schools and inspire community groups.
All training required for the volunteering role will be provided, covering everything you need to know about waste prevention through an e-learning programme designed and monitored by the University of Brighton.
Additional support is provided through monthly e-newsletters, site visits, phone calls, an active steering group, and regular emails.
Ron Marsh, a waste prevention advisor from Lancing, said: “I have always felt strongly about waste and recycling issues but was unprepared for how interesting I found it when I started doing the training to be a Waste Prevention Advisor.
“I have enjoyed going out to various events and talking to people; there is a great deal of interest and giving simple advice is a satisfying way to do something for the environment.
“I would definitely recommend considering taking part in the WPA scheme.”
Lionel Barnard, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents Services, said: “This is a brilliant scheme that continues to help educate the way people think about waste.
“The WPAs have helped improve people’s knowledge about reducing, reusing and recycling waste and to encourage them to understand the importance of putting the right items in the right bins, clean, dry and loose.
“We want West Sussex householders to reduce household waste sent to landfill and the WPAs play a key role in encouraging residents to do so.”
The WPA Scheme’s training courses run annually and those who volunteer now will start training in February 2015 – ready for events next spring and summer.
