As a follow on from my last writings on your CV content, understanding your individual achievements with your experiences and skills is a very interesting personal exercise.
Why, is this so important? – because, all of us have individual talents that shine through and others hidden away that are not considered relevant or just simply dismissed. We can be modest and humble about what all of us can contribute to society, but most of the time we have reasons with enjoyment for undertaking day to day work – be it voluntary or employed. However, we must not forget that some jobs are taken out of necessity and do not create enthusiasm or ambition.
What is the solution or method to try and change, which will create a different outlook on your working life and overall contentment. Well, one sheet of paper and fold exactly in half (length ways or vertical). Now the fun begins, because on the left side of the fold you will list all your experiences including voluntary work and they do not have to be in chronological sequence either. On the right side beyond the fold list all your skills including your skills from hobbies.
So, this appears so simple and the complete exercise in brain storming should not be forced and be there to stop and start over a few days. The essence of this personal journey of discovery and thinking back is to simply shine a light on all the gifted talent that everyone has – yes, I truly believe we should be “Blowing You Own Trumpet of Achievements”. In this life our ours, those who shout the loudest get heard. Equally, that is the sign of an extrovert personality type, but we have amazing introverts at the opposite end that are equally gifted.
Now, we return to the completed one sheet of paper with all the amazing words that describe both your experiences and skills. I have no doubt that when looking at the list that you cannot believe the abundance or variety that is bouncing back at you. Can I say, with utter confidence that this is a living document, you will suddenly have a light bulb moment and add more and more.
What is the end game on this exercise, when you get asked at a job interview a question that is trying to ascertain your experiences and skills. Your piece of paper comes into its own with the story of achievements behind those words that are meaningful and carry authority to be listened to.
