Archive film of Sussex coastline showcased

Old film footage of the Sussex coastline will be shown during a talk in Chichester next month (26 September).
The talk, entitled ‘Sea Sussex’, will be given by Dr Frank Gray at West Sussex Record Office in Chichester as part of their regular programme of events.

Dr Gray will present a fascinating portrait of maritime Sussex with films drawn from the collection of Screen Archive South East, including the launching of the Selsey and Shoreham lifeboats, ‘Swallows and Amazon’ style sailing in Itchenor in the 1930s and, in glorious colour, Sunday School outings to Littlehampton in 1949.
Visitors will also be able to view a display to mark the event.

The Screen Archive, which is responsible for collecting and preserving films of Sussex, Surrey and Kent, has a growing collection of material dating from 1896 to the present day.

The film collection includes documentaries, newsreels, advertisements and ‘home movies’ and reflects the changing nature of life and work in Sussex during the 20th century.

The talk will take place at West Sussex Record Office, 3 Orchard Street, Chichester PO19 1DD on Tuesday 26 September at 7.00pm.

A limited number of tickets are available at £8, which can be purchased in advance on 01243 753602. Alternatively, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/ro and view the ‘What’s on at the Record Office’ page.
