No charge for DIY waste

West Sussex County Council has confirmed that it will continue to allow DIY waste at household waste recycling sites without charges.

Charging for disposing of waste has been suspended since April this year on a temporary basis. Now Deborah Urquhart, Cabinet Member for Environment, has taken a decision not to reinstate charges.

She said: “We said to our residents that we would suspend charging until the Government clarifies its position on the matter. It is not expected that Government will be in a position to do this for some time so we have taken the step to confirm we will not charge and look for savings in other ways.”

The Council will continue its drive to increase recycling in order to drive down the amount that ends up in landfill sites and put material into good use.

Deborah added: “We throw away £3m of recycling material in our black bag waste each year. Our focus will continue to be on encouraging residents to reuse and recycle more.”
